Three seems to offer a very good deal but I don't have any mates who use them, so anyone want to share any experiences of them or other networks on a train near Clapham!
The other thing that is strange is that for the first time ever it would be cheaper for me to buy the phone I want (probably Samsum Galaxy S3) and get a sim only deal rather than signing up for a contract with the phone free...

Ok, so this week i got in a demo game of Dust Tactics. It's an interesting game, with a nice slick ruleset that's easy to pick up but with sufficient tactical depth to keep things interesting - in particular the use of orders and suppression do make for an interesting game!

Model wise it's an interesting one - they're pre-built and undercoated, which means you can firstly pretty much just play them out of the box, but also they're made of soft plastic, which means they're actually pretty durable as well.

On the negative, the detail certainly isn't up to GW standards, but in saying that they look pretty good, and do the job so it's hardly that much of a negative really...

Overall good fun!

Oh yes, it's that time again - the mighty BRITCON returns for yet another long weekend of wargaming awesome.

It's now possible to buy tickets, and also book accomodation, and even better they're finally accepting payment by Paypal, which makes the whole process a heck of a lot easier than in previous years. Space goes quickly, especially if you're after the student accomodation (which is cheap, clean, quiet, and quite reasonable really).

I will of course be there playing Epic, but for those not enlightened to how awesome Epic is, the main system being played is Flames of War - so if you're looking for a big event to cut your teeth on, this could be it! (they also do a puntload of other systems, with even a few poor souls playing some game called 'Warhammer Fantasy, but not that many) Definitely one of the highlights of last years tournaments for me, and i would highly reccommend it if you're looking for a top notch wargaming experience.

It is a little different time wise, and if you haven't heard me going on about it before, the event is 6 games, with the first game played on the Friday night from 6pm, and then starting early (8am ish) on the saturday for 3 games, and playing through till around 7-8 pm in the evening, with then a final 2 games on the sunday. It is somewhat the 'ironman' event of the calendar year, but totally worth it

Gentlemen all,

so over the past month or two I've had a few games of bloodbowl (the boardgame version) with the Orc team I painted a few years ago, and it reminded me how much fun it is, though I missed that bit of keeping track of games and seeing your team progress.

Now a league requires a lot of effort and people might not want to commit so much time, so I wondered if anyone fancied getting involved in a casual pick up system where we play games, keep track of our teams, and see them progress, maybe with a saturday cup competition, but nothing more serious than that. Happy to run a few intro games if anyone fancies a refresher.

So, any interest at all?

So how did the games go last night? i was doing Epic 'training' so wasn't actually playing myself, but hopefully i wasn't too offputting to anyone nearby with my having to shout a bit so both Rob and Rohan could hear me

It was a great game to watch/advise on though, with Rohan's Chaos Marines making some ballsy agressive moves on turn 1 putting a heck of a lot of pressure on Rob's eldar, and i think he was expecting to be pretty much wiped off the table in turn 2. However, the ways of the eldar are tricksy, and with some fair dice and cunning plans the eldar reversed the situation and regained the initiative, although it did cost Rob his right flank and blitz, in the centre of the table the combined attentions of the warlock titan and big guardian squad was sufficient to batter and break one of the big chaos retinues and consolidate on rohan's objectives, and also give Rob a big activation advantage on turn 3, especially with some terrible rallying rolls from Rohan which saw 2 of his armoured companies stay broken and made it increasingly difficult to regain the forward initiative. Probably the biggest problem Rohan had was his Ravager titan, which is a bit on the slow side and struggled to get to where it was needed, languishing somewhat around Rohan's blitz and rob's objective with not a great deal to do. Turn 3 and i was expecting it to go to a draw (and in fairness on hindsight if the chosen had moved back and covered both objectives and the blitz it would have been), but some horrendous dice from Rohan saw the ravager titan broken by the combined attentions of the warlock titan, and a few other units. Sad times for Chaos, as this allowed Rob to nip in and capture the blitz and another objective for a 2-1 win in turn 3. And seriously, the number of failed armour saves on the Ravager was astounding...

Anyway, hopefully both came away with a better understanding of the rules and with some cunning plans/strategies for their next games

With Salute taking up all my painting/ toy solider time over recent months I have failed somewhat to get my evil FoW Germans painted up for the escalation league as I have promised myself I would. However, with that now behind us my Afrika korps made their way to the painting table again.

First off I finished the painting on the second combat squad so could finally field two properly painted units in every game. That, and it means the painting I have done to date does now, sort of, reflect what I sound have done in March for the campaign. Not that I can claim that.

Next up was a mortar team needed for the April section of the campaign. These guys, like much of my FoW toys, had already been assembled and undercoated so not built from scratch as the campaign suggests it should be but it I did that I’d have nothing to paint. With these guys it was just a case of sanding the base and getting on with the painting.

The paint scheme I have used is sort of right for the Afrika korps, I dry brush the modes with a camo green, paint the faces, hands, bags, boots and webbing and them ink with a dark brown ink to bring out the details.

Having finished the second combat squad I also ran out of the grass tufts that I have been using for my FoW bases, but other than that 5 minute job they’re done.

Next, was the commitment to create some club scenery for FoW. This month, April, was hedges. So I used some of the left over cork bought for the Salute board to make them. Cutting them into ½ inch strips about 5” long with a 2” piece at the top to form a T shape. This means they didn’t need additional basing and would be stable on the table top, combined with the weight of the cork means that they shouldn’t move about during games.

A better effect could have been achieved by coating them in PVA and course sand. At this scale they can be dry brushed to look like leaves and it would have disguised the sharp edges.

I painted them up with a base of Dark Angles green, stippled with goblin green and then topped it off with a splatter of camo green. The little red spots were done with the end of a pencil dipped in paint. All in all they took about 2 hours from start to finish. Whilst far from perfect they will help fiil the need we have for liner obstacles.

Here they are again with a tank and an infantry team for scale.

That should hopefully bring me up to speed on the paining for the campaign. Next up will be the 88s as my AA selection and a Stuka to give opponents something to shoot down.

Hmm, so they're starting to appear now! how much of them is anything close to true and how much us utter tosh is anyone's guess, although by the sounds of them so far hopefully they're tosh!

From BOLS (and orginally i believe from Blood of Kittens):

-Many of the general concepts from magic from Warhammer Fantasy are coming to Warhammer 40,000.
-There will be "lore equivalents"
-Psychic powers will be generated randomly by psykers (like fantasy)
-Entirely new rules for constructing army lists (~Look at Fantasy for hints)
-The FOC may be history

Could be sad times for all those 40k players out there if they get lumped with some kind of 'fantasy with moar gunz!' Still, given 8th Ed. Fantasy has hardly been a stellar success i do find it unlikely that they'd start copying bits of it for the more popular of the two games...
